Sclerotherapy is a procedure used for the treatment of unwanted blood vessels, commonly referred to as spider veins. Spider veins are tiny superficial veins just beneath the skin often radiating out from a central point, reminiscent of the shape of a spider. They may also appear as fine, separate lines, as a web-like maze, or as branches from a single trunk of a tree-shaped form. These dilated small blood vessels have a red or bluish color and appear mostly on the thighs, ankles, calves and occasionally on the face. Unwanted blood vessels are treated by the injection of a solution that will cause them to disappear or become much smaller. This procedure is very safe and has been used for decades. After multiple treatments most patients experience a 50-90% improvement in their unwanted leg veins. |
