Resurfacing

SkinSmart Dermatology offers the most advanced options for fractional resurfacing, a non-invasive laser therapy that dramatically improves skin texture and pigmentation with minimal downtime.

Q: What conditions does fractional resurfacing treat?

A: Fractional resurfacing is very effective on fine lines and wrinkles (including around the eyes), age or sun spots, acne scars, surgical scars and sun damage.

Q: What is fractional resurfacing?

A: Traditional laser resurfacing is a non-surgical treatment that uses laser light to stimulate the creation of new, healthy tissue to replace skin imperfections. Fractional resurfacing is a new technology in which only a small fraction of the skin receives the laser light.

The laser delivers a series of high precision microbeams that create narrow, deep columns of tissue penetration well below the epidermis (skin surface) and into the dermis, while preserving the superficial epidermis and surrounding healthy tissue from damage.  This "fractional" treatment allows the skin to heal much faster than if the entire area were treated at once, using the body's natural healing process to create new, healthy skin cells.

The healthy cells in the untouched spots promote rapid healing of the entire treatment area, resulting in faster recovery time and minimal side effects. The result is softer, smoother and healthier skin without an uncomfortable healing period.

Q: What kinds of fractional resurfacing does SkinSmart offer?

A: We offer Fraxel Re:Pair and DEKA Smartxide DOT and eMatrix™ Sublative Rejuvenation. Although all treatments use fractional resurfacing technology, there are important differences between them.

Q: Why does SkinSmart Dermatology have three different resurfacing lasers when most dermatology practices offer just one (if they offer one at all)?

A: Lasers are expensive and most practices can only afford one at the most. As you might imagine, having just one machine can lead to a “one size fits all” approach where every patient and every skin condition receives the same treatment. Because we are a leading dermatology and skincare practice, we have chosen to invest in several different lasers (we also offer laser hair removal using the Candela GentleLASE device and Candela’s Vbeam laser for the treatment of broken capillaries) so that we might obtain the best possible results for our patients.

Q: What differentiates SkinSmart’s fractional resurfacing lasers? Is one better than the other?

A: Yes, one laser is definitely better than the other—for each individual! Each laser has its own set of advantages and drawbacks that might make it more appropriate for an individual’s needs. For example, if your primary concern is wrinkles around the eyes, the DEKA Smartxide DOT might be the right choice due to its handpiece. eMatrix or DEKA might also be your choice if minimal downtime is more important to you than getting results in a single treatment. Conversely, Fraxel Re:Pair might be better if you want results in a single treatment.  During your consultation, Dr. Callahan will evaluate your skin and consider your aesthetic goals and preferences to determine the right fractional resurfacing treatment for you.
