Healthy, beautiful skin begins at SkinSmart Dermatology®. Request a cosmetic consultation or call our office in Sarasota at(941) 308-7546.
While Fraxel re:pair treatments require longer downtime than our more gentle fractional options, SkinSmart Dermatology patients can expect dramatic improvements in a single treatment. We perform Fraxel treatments to provide one or more of the following improvements:
- Smoother, more even skin tone and texture
- More even skin coloring as freckles, age spots and excess pigmentation are erased
- Softened frown lines and deep wrinkles
- Tissue tightening for a significant improvement in overall skin tone
Before we recommend any treatment, we perform an in-depth cosmetic consultation. We will thoroughly evaluate your skin to determine which treatment is best suited to the condition of your skin and your aesthetic goals. Other skin rejuvenation options includeIPL Photofacial, SmartXide DOT® and eMatrix®.
How it Works
Fraxel re:pair laser treatment uses a high-intensity carbon dioxide (CO2) laser to partially remove the uppermost layer of your skin. The laser energy stimulates your body’s own natural healing process, which replaces old, damaged skin cells with fresh, glowing, healthy skin. But unlike other ablative procedures, Fraxel re:pair is a “fractional” resurfacing treatment. Rather than removing the entire surface of the skin, Fraxel re:pair emits thousands of microscopic laser columns to penetrate deep into the skin and remove old, damaged skin cells. The surrounding untreated areas help facilitate the healing process. A board-certified dermatologic surgeon and

When you arrive for your Fraxel treatment, your skin will be cleansed. Next, a topical numbing agent will be applied and allowed to take effect for 60 minutes. Dr. Elizabeth Callahan may also give you another medication, such as Ativan, to help you relax. Most patients describe an increased sensation of heat during the treatment, and there may be some discomfort or pain. However, unlike with traditional CO2 laser treatments, you will feel quite comfortable immediately after a Fraxel re:pair treatment.
Dr. Callahan will customize a treatment specific to each patient. Depending upon your desires and facial structure, she will determine if your skin requires more or less energy and even modify treatment during the procedure for various skin challenges or problem areas. With this new technique, the entire face can be treated in approximately 30 to 40 minutes.
Recovery & Results
You can expect results that are progressive and long-lasting after Fraxel treatments. New skin develops within one to two weeks of treatment and your skin continues to improve over several months.
Soon after the procedure, the surface of your skin will feel softer, look brighter and show more even tone. The next three to six months will bring more improvement as the body repairs the deeper dermal tissues that have been affected by the treatment, producing longer beneficial changes associated with a healthy, youthful appearance. Unlike other laser treatments used in the past, Fraxel re:pair reveals new skin without the pale look older technology produced
During the healing period, your skin will be especially sun sensitive. Sun exposure will increase your risk of hyper- and hypo-pigmentation, so it is imperative that you avoid sun exposure for a full week after treatment and use a daily sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and zinc oxide for six months thereafter. During the first two weeks after treatment, be sure to stay indoors whenever possible, wear a wide-brimmed hat and keep your skin well moisturized. Do not smoke, as smoking will impair the healing process. Obviously, you should not use a tanning booth either before or after treatment.
