Laser Hair Removal
Excess hair is unsightly but the methods we typically use to remove it can make an even more unpleasant mess. Waxing, tweezing, depilatories, bleaching, plucking and shaving can result in ingrown hairs, cuts, irritation, stubble and even scarring. And then there is the hassle (and expense) of waxing/tweezing/threading/bleaching/shaving yet again. Hair removal can be irritating in more ways than one.At SkinSmart Dermatology, we offer a permanent, nearly painless hair reduction solution without damaging the skin! SkinSmart uses the Candela GentleLASE to quickly, comfortably, and efficiently remove excess hair.
Unwanted facial and body hair can be eliminated in a quick series of treatments. Our laser uses pulsed light to target, break down and destroy the melanin (dark pigment) in hair, and is therefore only effective on light skin.
Q: How many treatments are required?
A: Our hair grows, lives, rests and then sheds out naturally. This occurs in 3 stages of growth: anagen (growing), catagen (resting), and telogen (shedding). Laser treatment maximizes effectiveness during the anagen, or growing phase of the hair growth cycle, when melanin is abundant.
On average, patients require 5 treatments over a 12 –15 month period of time, scheduling once every 8 -10 weeks apart. After your initial treatment, some of the hair will purge out the day of your treatment and because the laser is able to detect the hair much deeper into the skin it may take up to 3 weeks for the treated hairs to fall out.
Hair falls out within 10-14 days. You can use a mild scrub in the shower on the 10th day, which helps exfoliate the skin and remove hair.
Q: What areas can be treated?
A: Laser hair removal will work on almost any part of the body, from your legs, bikini line, arms, chin, upper lip, face and neck, to even your back or shoulders... practically anywhere. Common areas include underarms, chest, feet and hands. Facial and bikini areas are usually completed in less than ten minutes; legs, backs and larger areas can take longer.
